Katerina, neglected and unhappy in her marriage, commits cruelest crimes like Shakespearian Lady Macbeth. Together with her lover Sergei, she commits the murder of her husband Zinoviy. Previously, she already murdered her father-in-law, who threatened to reveal the love relationship between Katerina and Sergei.
For Shostakovich, Nikolai Leskov’s novella was only the starting point to awaken understanding of a distressed woman whose pursuit of self-determination is suppressed by society. He succeeds in the balancing between disgust of Katerina’s reprehensible deeds and sympathy with her by combining satirical, grotesque and tragic elements in his music. Violence, eroticism, and the all-crippling boredom of 19th century Russian society are the supporting elements of this composition.
Choir and orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the direction of James Conlon accompany great soloists such as Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet, Vladimir Vaneev and Vsevolod Grivnov in this live recording.
